O DETERMINE HOW THE RUDDER IS DAMAGED.

© IF ONLY TILLER, SEE TILLER: BREAKAGE.

© IF STEERING GEAR IS UNREPAIRABLE, SEE BELOW.

© REPAIRS ARE DIFFERENT FOR OUTBOARD AND INBOARD RUDDERS.

1. If the rudder is inboard and the stock has been bent, ingnore it. Instead, you will have to fashion a rudder of sweep to work off the transom. If the blade is damaged, it may still be possible to steer the boat, albeit with reduced sail. However, if the response is minimal and you are still some distance from port, some sort of juryrigged rudder will have to be constructed.

2. Should the steering gear be damaged beyond repair, an emergency tiller should be aboard. Since many more yachts are wheelsteered now than even twenty years ago, essential spares should be carried-cable, clamps, sprocket wheels, gears, etc. Obviously, you will never be covered for all contingencies. And, sooner or later, you will have to rig that emergency tiller. Accidents do happen that will incapacitate both wheel and rudder.

3. The simplest repairs are to a transom-hung rudder, which can be shipped and patched, or even replaced from parts fashioned from floorboards, hatchboards, etc. If the pintles and gudgeons are not bent or broken, repairs should be fairly straightforward, and if the rudder is wood, can be accommodated with screws and bolts. If the rudder is fiberglass, the same methods can be used but reinforcement will be necessary in the form of load-spreading washers (of metal or wood) and lashings. However, if the major portion of the blade has been torn away, and the fastenings between rudder and hull are left without integrity, a new rudder assembly will have to be fashioned.

4. Inboard rudders pose a different set of problems. If the rudder bearing has been broken, and the rudder is slamming back and forth, potential exists for major hull damage or rupture, especially in a seaway. Some means of locking the rudder in position, or even of shipping the entire assembly, will have to be devised. One good precaution is to drill a small hole in the trailing edge of the blade,
